Q:How/when did you know that you were an alcoholic? Was it only when the doctor told you about your liver damage, or did you know before then?
In my experience, alcoholics know it a long time before they do anything about it. I knew it for a long time, but I was just too scared to admit it because it meant I’d have to do something about it. And the idea of never drinking again frightened me. I sincerely didn’t think I could function without it. So I deluded myself for a very long time, saying, “Eh, this is just what people my age do. We drink until it’s time to not drink anymore, and then we just move on with our lives.”
But no, I knew years before I quit drinking that I was an alcoholic. And even though I’ve not had even a sip of booze in almost four years, I still have days where I crave it. It’s pretty fucking crazy.
Q:Why is it you chose to document your process of becoming sober? Do you feel as though it actually helped you? Also, while I'm sure you get praise regularly, I am a huge fan and really enjoy all of your articles. You rock.
It helped me quite a bit. But more importantly, I was never given the information that I present in those articles the way I should have been when I was a teenager. Now I have the opportunity to pass along that info to kids who aren’t getting that extremely vital education. I’ve actually lost count of the number of emails and messages I’ve received from people saying that those articles quite literally changed their lives. It’s in the thousands. If I found out it was more than ten grand, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised.
That’s become one of the few things I hold as a personal source of pride, and I think it makes those articles more important than I ever originally thought possible.
In honor of the new Xbox reveal … and the complaints it brought with it
My new article runs tomorrow, but in the meantime, here’s one I did a year ago that predicted the exact complaints everyone is now making about the brand new Xbox reveal: http://www.cracked.com/blog/4-video-game-complaints-were-just-going-to-have-to-get-over/
My new article is up!
Q:So did you hate BioShock Infinite?
I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t anything special. The story was not even remotely close to the “masterpiece” that people told me it was. It was an average story with a very, very, very predictable “twist.” As an FPS, it was below average, but I know that’s the one big complaint most people gave it.
It was a $60 game that was worth closer to $40 in my opinion. I played through it once, and I’ll never touch it again.
Q:today's column made me laugh so hard i am literally weeping
