As a fellow Illinoisian, I am curious to know how you managed to stay in the Midwest and keep a prestigious internet job. I understand that you write from home, but I always imagine that there are certain advantages to living in L.A. and being able to 'know the right people.'
Well, that’s the great thing about working on the internet: the city and state you live in is no longer that important. Yeah, you do have the advantage of being able to talk to a real live person if you lived in L.A., and that can make a huge difference when you’re making contacts. But using the net, I’ve made contacts in Africa, South America, Mexico, Spain… it’s insane how much easier it is to make contacts now than it was 15 years ago.
But working from home like this keeps me relaxed, and that’s desperately needed when writing comedy and pulling 12-18 hour work days. I don’t know that I’ll always be able to work from home in the middle of a quiet, crimeless Midwest town, but I’d sure prefer it.
